Professor Amanda Leach

Professor Amanda Leach is leader of the Ear Health Research Program, Child Health Division at the Menzies School of Health Research. She won a NHMRC Career Development Award in 2004 and in 2011 a Senior Research Fellowship which was awarded the Elizabeth Blackburn Fellowship for top ranking female applicant in the clinical category. Professor Leach has led clinical trials and parallel microbiological studies that provide both an evidence base for antibiotic treatment of OM in Indigenous children and understanding of how bacterial density and heterogeneity contribute to poor therapeutic outcomes. All clinical trials have been incorporated into an updated OATSIH guideline released nationally in 2012 (Morris, Leach et al., 2010) along with the launch of the 'Care for Kids' Ears' promotion for which Prof. Leach was a technical advisor. In 2014 Prof Leach led a successful application for a 5-year NHMRC-funded Centre of Research Excellence in Ear and Hearing Health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children. (CIA)
